WiseLED & WiseDIVE Technology

The WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlight range represents many thousands of hours of research and development and demonstrate the company’s commitment to designing and manufacturing the ultimate LED flashlight. On this page we will try to give a brief summary of what makes a WiseLED / WiseDIVE torch so special.

LED lighting technology

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are a semi-conductor lighting technology. Introduced in the 1960s, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light and were typically used as panel indicator lights.

Modern LEDs give very high levels of brightness, this, coupled with low energy consumption, long working life (50,000+ hours in the case of the LEDs used in the WiseLED / WiseDIVE range) and durability (no filament as with delicate incandescent and HID bulbs) make LEDs ideal for torches and flashlights.

However not all LEDs and LED torches are equal; and WiseLED / WiseDIVE select emitters from the top bins, where consistency of light output, colour temperature and reliability are assured. And the rest of the package is no less carefully engineered...

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology

Lithium-ion battery chemistry is popular in consumer electronics, with one of the best energy-to-weight ratios, no memory effect, and a slow loss of charge when not in use. A high energy density means more capacity by volume.

The battery pack in the WiseLED Tactical and WiseDIVE range is based on six quality Li-ion 18650 cells, each 3.7 volts, combined in series giving 11.1 volts and 5.2 amps and is equivalent to 40 standard AA batteries. The WiseDIVE Canister Tech battery option upgrades the battery to nine quality Li-ion 18650 cells, each 3.7 volts, combined in series giving 11.1 volts and 7.8 amps.

In-built charging circuitry

All WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlights have in-built charging circuitry meaning they can be charged in-car. A WiseLED / WiseDIVE will charge on any input voltage from 13.5 to 18 volts DC (the reason for using 13.5V as supposed to 12V is to avoid draining the vehicle battery unless the alternator is running). The chargers (cable and cradle) can be used with all WiseLED / WiseDIVE torches.

Battery handling

Li-ion chemistry gives many advantages, but it is vital they be treated correctly.

With correct treatment the Li-ion battery pack will do a minimum of 300 full charge/discharge cycles. Li-ion battery chemistry does not survive being left discharged 'flat' for long periods of time. If you are storing your WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlight then remember to fully charge the battery first. In fact we recommend you keep your flashlight fully charged at all times. The self-discharge time is 5 years.

Incorrect treatment of the battery may lead to the warranty becoming void.

Environmental

By definition a rechargeable battery is more environmentally sensitive than single-use batteries.

When it is time to change the battery in your WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlight please email support@wiseled-torch.co.uk to arrange sending it to our Service Centre. Spent batteries will be disposed of by us in accordance with EU waste legislation.

Ramflow – cooling

LEDs get hot when active, so effective use of the diodes requires effective cooling, which is what our new patented RamFlow cooling system delivers. The new torches actually perform 30% better than we had anticipated thanks to the effective cooling system! And even with the new cooling system and higher output, we have managed to decrease the size and weight of the torch.

The new design of our torch heads uses forced convection as a cooling system. The principle of forced convection makes it ideal for cooling the surface of the heated torch head, as the cooling accelerates with the rising of the torch head temperature. When the air surrounding the torch head flows with a speed of 1 meter pr. second, the effect equals a surface with an area twice as large, making the cooling twice as effective.

Design & construction

WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlights combine extensive design, engineering, electronics and optical expertise.

Body

The body of a WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlight is made from aerospace-grade aluminium, anodised for longevity. The body is then coated in a thermoplastic rubber for enhanced grip and durability.

Lens

The lens is manufactured from optically clear PMMA poly(methyl methacrylate) and are designed to combine an outer ring of diffused light and an inner beam containing 80% of the remaining light to give effective long-range capability. The grooves on the lens maximise light output and protect the lens from scratching. If the lens on your WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlight gets dirty simple rinse it with water.

Button design

The buttons on a WiseLED / WiseDIVE flashlight are waterproof push buttons of the company’s own design. The buttons equalise the water pressure acting on them ensuring that they are not accidentally activated at depth by the water pressure.

The buttons have an in-built over-pressure valve that allows pressure to escape from the flashlight. In the very unlikely event of a battery malfunction the button will allow venting and prevent damage to the flashlight.
